Before the Stage: The Quiet Work of Purposeful Leadership

There’s always a quiet moment before a keynote when I stop and listen — not to the crowd, but to myself.

Not nerves. Not noise.
Just stillness.

On Monday, I travel to Des Moines for World Food Prize Week — a global gathering that celebrates innovation, leadership, and hope in the future of food.
Throughout the week, world leaders, scientists, and visionaries will share the stage, but my favorite part comes midweek — when I’ll deliver a keynote to youth leaders from around the world.

They’re the future voices of change — young people tackling climate, hunger, and equity with more courage and creativity than most boardrooms could ever hold.

And as I pack my bag, I keep thinking: the real preparation for a talk like this doesn’t start on the plane. It starts within.

Because leadership isn’t performance.
It’s presence.

The Shift That Changed Everything

Years ago, I thought preparation meant perfecting slides, timing transitions, and memorizing lines.

Then one morning before a big talk, I heard this voice inside me say:
“What if it’s not about getting it right — what if it’s about getting real?”

That changed everything.

Now, before I walk on any stage, I pause. I take a breath. And I remind myself:

“You’re not here to impress. You’re here to connect.”

That’s the foundation of purposeful leadership — and it’s what I hope to model for these young leaders at the World Food Prize.

When we lead from connection, not perfection, our impact lasts longer than any applause.

Preparing the Ground

If you’ve ever gardened, you know — the seed isn’t where it starts. The soil is.

You turn it. You nurture it. You make space for life to grow.

Leadership is no different.

The soil is our inner world — our clarity, values, purpose, and emotional grounding.
If that ground is depleted or full of noise, nothing takes root.

So before the World Food Prize week begins, I’m doing the same inner work I encourage others to do:

  • Reflect on what truly matters.
  • Reconnect to purpose.
  • Ground yourself before the whirlwind begins.

Because whether you’re leading a team, mentoring students, or speaking to a global audience — your energy sets the tone long before your words ever do.

What Global Youth Leaders Teach Us

Every year, I walk away from youth events like this completely re-energized.

These young people don’t just talk about leadership — they live it. They lead with collaboration, empathy, and possibility.
They remind me that courage often looks like curiosity, and real leadership means showing up before you have all the answers.

That’s the kind of leadership our world needs — and it begins with the quiet work we do before the stage, before the meeting, before the moment.

As I Head to Des Moines

Tomorrow I’ll board my flight for Des Moines — journal in my bag, heart open, ready to listen as much as speak.

This week isn’t about headlines or handshakes. It’s about presence, purpose, and the privilege of standing alongside the next generation of changemakers.

And if there’s one thing I know for sure, it’s this:

The most meaningful leadership moments begin in stillness — and ripple outward through service.

    Lead with Soul

So before your next big presentation, meeting, or life pivot — pause.
    Take one deep breath.
    Reconnect with what really matters.

    That’s where purposeful leadership begins.
And that’s where your soul does its best work.
