If you had told the shyest kid in my high school that one day he’d stand on stage as a keynote speaker, I never would have believed you. But that’s exactly what happened — and my journey from shy student to motivational speaker has been shaped by service, storytelling, resilience, and finding my why.
The Student Years: Finding Courage
Shy beginnings: In high school, I avoided the spotlight.
University of Maine: College changed everything.
- Helped reinstate Maine Day, a tradition rooted in service and community.
- In 1984, received the Student Leadership Award from the University President.
- Delivered a halftime speech before thousands of students — my first real taste of how words can move a crowd.
- Mascot days: Represented UMaine as the mascot, which meant:
- Radio interviews and press tours.
- Public appearances across the state.
- Recognized as one of the Top 10 Division I mascots in the country.
- Mentorship:
- Gary Thorne (now ESPN) interviewed me often and helped me polish my presence and delivery.
- Nancy Dysart, Alumni Activities Director, became a mentor who guided me with encouragement and professionalism.
These experiences taught me courage, confidence, and the truth that public speaking is a skill you can grow.
Early Career: Speaking in Service
- Through Rotary, I began giving talks on service, peace, and community.
- Delivered graduation keynotes that inspired students stepping into new chapters.
- Spoke at peace events, weaving leadership with justice, service, and reconciliation.
These opportunities reinforced that speaking was never about me — it was about service and lifting others. It was my first real step into becoming a leadership speaker.
Mid-Career: Refining the Craft
- Joined Toastmasters International, where I:
- Honed my storytelling and delivery.
- Learned the discipline of preparation and the freedom of presence.
- Gained the confidence to connect with any audience.
- Expanded into consulting and leadership workshops, guiding organizations through:
- Recruitment and retention challenges.
- Strengthening team culture.
- Building resilience in times of stress and change.
The Leap: From Fintech to Soulful Leadership
- Spent years in global leadership roles in fintech, leading diverse teams across borders.
- Over time, my why shifted. My joy wasn’t in metrics or quarterly results anymore.
- I realized what lit me up was speaking, facilitating, and helping people lead with authenticity and soul.
- So I made the leap — dedicating myself fully to keynotes, workshops, retreats, and consulting.
It was the scariest and most soul-aligned decision I’ve ever made — and the most fulfilling.

Today: Speaking With Soul
Today, I see keynote speaking not as a job, but as the truest expression of my journey. Whether I’m on stage, leading a workshop, hosting a retreat, or guiding leaders through consulting, I live out the four pillars of Lead with Soul:
- Authenticity – standing tall as yourself.
- Connection – remembering we rise together.
- Purpose – reaching upward toward what matters most.
- Resilience – weathering storms with deep roots.
That’s the path that brought me here — from the shyest kid in high school to keynote speaker, motivational speaker, and leadership speaker. And the journey continues every time I share a story that helps someone rediscover their own why.
