The Joy of Public Speaking — and Why I Do It

Patrick Dunn with a group of Rangers

By Patrick Dunn

A few months ago, I organized and led the Peace Walk at Muir Woods to honor the 80th anniversary of the UN Charter. I partnered with like-minded organizations who shared a vision of peace, stewardship, and service. For me, it wasn’t just another event — it was an act of giving back, an expression of my own sense of purpose.

Standing beneath those towering redwoods, I thought about leadership. Redwoods survive because they are deeply rooted, connected underground, resilient through storms, and always reaching toward the light. That image has stayed with me. It mirrors everything I believe about soulful leadership — and it’s why I choose the work I do as a keynote speaker, workshop facilitator, retreat leader, and consultant.

Keynote Speaking: Rooted in Authenticity

When I step on stage to give a keynote address, my goal is simple: to be real. Audiences don’t connect with a polished script — they connect with a story that resonates. Like the trunk of a redwood, a keynote gives people something solid to lean on.

  • Share authentic stories of peacebuilding, resilience, and environmental stewardship.
  • Inspire large audiences with practical tools they can use immediately.
  • Reignite trust by reminding leaders to stay rooted in their values.

    Leadership Workshops: Connected Through Community

Workshops are where the root system spreads. Just as redwoods hold each other up through their intertwined roots, workshops create connection. People realize they’re not alone in facing challenges like recruitment, retention, political stress, or climate responsibility.

    • Hands-on exercises to solve real workplace challenges.
    • Team-building activities that strengthen collaboration.
    • Connection that lasts long after the session ends.

    Leadership Retreats: Rediscovering Purpose

Retreats are the canopy, reaching upward toward light. In quiet, natural spaces, leaders step away from the noise and rediscover their purpose. Like redwoods growing skyward, retreats create room to stretch, breathe, and realign with what matters most.

    • Space for reflection, storytelling, and renewal.
    • Alignment of personal values with organizational mission.
    • Inspiration for leaders in peace, climate, and community work.

    Consulting: Building Resilience That Endures

consulting engagement is the ecosystem that helps the forest thrive. A keynote lights the spark, a workshop builds connection, a retreat restores purpose — but resilience comes from embedding soulful leadership into daily culture.

    • Translate inspiration into practical systems.
    • Build values-driven leadership cultures.
    • Sustain momentum through political, organizational, and environmental challenges.

The Four Pillars of Lead with Soul

The redwoods remind me of the four pillars I teach:

    • Authenticity – being true to yourself, like a tree standing exactly as it is.
    • Connection – intertwining roots that keep us steady together.
    • Purpose – reaching upward toward light and meaning.
    • Resilience – weathering storms because your roots go deep.

These aren’t abstract concepts. They are lived practices — the difference between burning out and leading with soul, between division and peace, between depletion and environmental stewardship.

    Why I Speak

The joy of public speaking isn’t in applause. It’s in the quiet moment when someone says, “That was exactly what I needed.” It’s in the team that finds its footing again. It’s in the leader who rediscovers courage to keep going.

That’s why I give keynotes, lead workshops, host retreats, and offer consulting. Because each one is a chance to plant seeds of authenticity, connection, purpose, and resilience — seeds that grow into stronger leaders, healthier organizations, more peaceful communities, and deeper care for the planet we all share.

Like the redwoods at Muir Woods, my work is about helping leaders stand tall, stay rooted, stay connected, and keep reaching for light — no matter the storm.
